What are Cosmetic Injectables?

Today, doctors have a better understanding of what causes facial aging and are able to address signs of aging like nasolabial folds, volume loss and facial lines and wrinkles to provide better results using injectable solutions like neuromodulators such as Botox Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin, hyaluronic acid fillers, collagen-based stimulators and fillers and even naturally injected fat.

The injectable revolution is a driving force behind the increase in noninvasive cosmetic treatments and advancements. Injectables have come a long way in preventing and reversing the visible signs of aging, with or without surgery. Just about everybody can benefit from an injectable at some point in time to help keep themselves looking young.

To fully understand how cosmetic injections work, it is important to fully understand the aging process.

Below is an explanation and timeline of aging

The major forces contributing to facial aging is the result of both superficial textural wrinkling of the skin and changes in the 3-dimensional (3-D) topography of the underlying structures.

Botox vs. Xeomin vs. Dysport

  • The main difference between Xeomin and Botox or Dysport, is that Xeomin contains just one ingredient: botulinum toxin A.

  • Xeomin is a “naked injectable,” meaning that it does not contain any additives. A benefit of a pure-form injectable is that the human body is less likely to become resistant to it. Some patients have developed antibodies to Botox and Dysport.

  • Xeomin is the only one of the three (Xeomin, Botox and Dysport) injectables that does not need to be refrigerated before use, due to its lack of additives.

  • Patients average 20 units of Xeomin per visit, vs. 20 units of Botox and 40 units of Dysport..

  • Xeomin might have the slowest “onset” of action of the 3 (Dysport onset in 24 hours, Botox onset in 72 hours, and Xeomin onset in 4 days.)

  • Xeomin may be “mildly more convenient” than Botox or Dysport, as the “product’s lack of complex proteins will help prevent antibody formation, or resistance to neuromuscular treatment with botulinum type A toxin, in patients being treated for neuromuscular conditions.”

  • Dysport has been shown to “drift” or diffuse more than Botox, increasing the chances of an accidental droopy eyelid or unintentional relaxation of a neighboring muscle due to diffusion of the product.

  • Botox and Dysport are not interchangeable because the products are dosed and injected differently.

Explaining Xeomin® vs. Botox®

Aesthetic medicine now uses botulinum toxin regularly in treating a variety of skin and muscle problems. Xeomin and Botox are two commonly used preparations, and in this article, we will review the similarities and differences between these two preparations

Similarities

  • There are a number of similarities between Xeomin and Botox. These are listed below –

  • Both Xeomin and Botox consist of the same basic ingredient – Botulinum toxin A, a toxin that this produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This neurotoxin acts by blocking the neuromuscular junction and has an effect on the skin and muscles it is injected into.

  • Both Xeomin and Botox exert their effect in around 7 days after it has been injected, with the effects lasting up to 6 months. The overall effect that results from Xeomin and Botox are the same.

  • Both Xeomin and Botox are measured in the same units, making it easy for the treating physician to measure up the required dose.

  • The cost of Xeomin and Botox are comparable, making the administration of either drug a choice that can lie with the physician or the patient.

Dermal Fillers vs Botox

  • Botox: This freezes muscles to stop creases and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. These are typically found in the upper face, such as the forehead and around the eyes.

  • Dermal fillers: These use hyaluronic acid and similar substances to "fill in" or plump areas that have lost volume and smoothness. This includes wrinkles around the mouth, thin lips, and cheeks that have lost fullness. They may also be used on forehead wrinkles, scars, and other areas that need extra volume for a smoother look.

  • Botox results last 3 to 4 months. Dermal filler results vary, depending on which filler is used.

Botox and fillers are different substances designed for different uses, they can sometimes be combined in one treatment. For instance, someone may use Botox to correct lines between the eyes and a filler to correct smile lines around the mouth.

The most important factor to consider when interviewing cosmetic injectors for your filler and Botox injections is their experience, how much of their time they devote to injecting cosmetic injectables and always check the photographic proof of their results. Each filler has different properties and achieves different results in different areas and the experience and skill of the injector make a huge difference in the outcome.
